Lucian Freud: Paintings
Published in Paperback by Thames & Hudson (October, 1997)
Author: Robert Hughes
Average review score:

"Fascinating Freud Figures"
Any book containing the work of Lucian Freud, I feel, writes itself. Not as an insult to the author, but as a testiment to the painter himself.

The full page color photos do justice to this great man, as well as a book can.

The author does an acceptional job of sumarizing and analyzing the painter's Life and work.

A definitve monograph
Every great artist deserves a great biographer: Bacon had David Sylvester, Giocometti had Sylvester AND James Lord, and Lucien Freud has Robert Hughes. Hughes' generous text is richly detailed and captures the mood of Freud's heavily impastoed works with turns of phrase that become as important as the art. To see the change in Freud's technique and approach to the figure from his early works to his current larger than life theatrical style is jolting. Always commited to portraiture his paintings have grown from the tightly surfaced, tiny but well known head of his friend Francis Bacon, to his current full figures as viewed from bizarre vantage. His brush technique has become more coarse and in doing so he is creating figures that, while monumental, feel as thogh they pulsate on the canvas. Freud is one of the important painters of our time and this book justifies that position on every level. A scholarly - yet pulsatile - study of a modern genius.

Nothing If Not Critical: Selected Essays on Art and Artists
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (February, 1992)
Author: Robert Hughes
Average review score:

Nice reading
Short essays, most of them published in Time magazine. Hughes'keen and witty look at several artists - from great masters to contemporary ones. We don't have to agree with everything he says, but he's always objective, concise and inteligent.

THE book of art criticism to buy ...
I don't know much about art and I'm not even sure I know what I like. But it's obvious that this book is intelligently - and honestly - written, and I'm writing this review mainly to recommend the book to other people who aren't terribly interested in the visual arts. Hughes has made me think more highly of painting in general and made me re-evaluate much of what I thought about the twentieth century. (Don't worry: he also confirmed much of it.) He isn't at all afraid to announce that the emperor has no clothes - so on those occasions when he confirms that the emperor is, in fact, fully dressed, I am much more inclined to believe him.

Wittily written, too.

Novell's Four Principles of Nds Design
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (13 August, 1996)
Authors: Jeffrey F. Hughes, Jeff Hughes, and Blair W. Thomas
Average review score:

How to do it right book
This book is for real world NDS applications. This book wont help for taking the Novell D&I test as this book is how it should be done. Novell's test is not interested in the right way.

An indispensable NDS design reference
This book is the standard. If you are installing NDS this is the book you MUST read before you begin. Critics of NDS are typically those who do not understand what a directory is and what it can do for you. This book will set them straight. Complaints about NDS installations arise due to poor installations. This book can prevent that. This book breaks down the information and is very easy to digest. This is an amazing book, and if you can find a copy of it, buy it. It's all about doing it right the first time, something far too few IT professionals understand. If you work with Netware and NDS, this is book should be in your library.

Great Little Book
The recipes are interesting and easy with sample menus. This would be a great book to put into a gift picnic basket and then give it to a friend. I'm looking forward to trying the grilled chicken kabobs with peach salsa. The herbed green beans with mozzarella and prosciutto look great, too.

Delightfu!
Reading this lovely artful book summons images of culinary delights and outdoor beauty. The themed menus are lucious. The art, stunning. This is a book that I will buy numerous copies of for friends. It is simply lovely to look at and provides tasty recipes. LOVE IT.

Rugby Tennessee: Being Some Account of the Settlement Founded on the Cumberland Plateau by the Board of Aid to Land Ownership, Limited (The American Utopian Adventure: Series 2)

Rugby--A short, duplicitous book
Line up all of you Will Wimbles. Hughes wants save you from the new "hell" of late Victorian England. He wants to give you the chance to finally work with your hands without being stigmatized as a common labourer. He'll tell you out of one side of his mouth that you'll have to work hard, but out of the other side of his mouth, he'll tell you that Tennessee living is easy. Don't think that he's trying to pull a fast one on you, though. These are his true impressions. You can trust few literary character as much as you can Thomas Hughes. That's probably why no one reads him....

True summary from a resident of Rugby, Tennessee
This review is written by a resident-expert on Rugby, Tennessee. My family has been connected to that town since 1939. I have read the book in question, and without a doubt it is a necessary book for anyone wanting to know Hughes's true intent for the establishment of Rugby in 1880. Its purpose was to inspire young men from England to come to what was then a rather remote region of East Tennessee, to work the land and make good for themselves. I would not recommend it for the casual visitor or tourist who comes to Rugby (several thousand per year)but only for those who have a strong attachment to the Rugby community, or to those who may be studying Thomas Hughes's life. He was an extraordinary character. He was a member of Parliament, Queen's Counsel, lawyer, judge, promoter of a movement known as Christian Socialism in the mid 1800s. This book would be of great value to someone doing detailed research on Hughes and his life. End.

Meaningfull plot.
I read this a little while ago, but i remember really liking it. It has a good moral as well as a good plot. The characters were very lifelike too. None of them are larger than life. The desert world was well done and highly original. I great read for any age.

Another Triumph for Monica Hughes
It is a long time since I read this book, but I still clearly remember the images that it created. It is about the three countries Komilant, Kamilant and Roshan. Roshan is the poor neighbour of the other two countries and so Antia, Princess of K&K, really does not want to go there to meet her future husband. However when she does she discovers there is much more to the place than sandy desert as she finds herself in the middle of a dreadful struggle between greed and corruption and pure goodness. This is a book about truth, love and self discovery. I loved it when I first read it, and every time after. I would strongly recommend it to anyone, along with its equally good sequel "The Promise".

I aplogise if I have got any details wrong - I haven't read it for about six years.

The Story Box

Finely written
This book is definitely recommended for those who love fantasy books. A young boy lives in a land where dreams and stories are forbidden until one day a girl gets washed upon their shores. Her name is Jennifer, and she is one of the Storytellers. The book is absolute brain candy and will leave you astounded. I recommend it to all kids above age 11.

A fabulous story
I read this book so I could vote for the Red Maple award. I voted for this book, and I will not be surprised if it wins. This is the suspenseful and heartwarming story of a boy on the island of Ariban who discovers a shipwrecked girl who washed up on the shore. She was Jennifer, the storyteller, who brought with her a box of stories. The land was Ariban, a place where imagination is forbidden, stories are outlawed, and dreams must die before morning. In this story, the boy must chose between the love of a friend, and the honour of his family.

Loved the book. Want to do the ride too.
I really enjoyed the book and wish I could take a year off and go for a ride like the writer did. It's a funny book and it's clear that you don't have to have ridden a horse to be able to ride 3000 miles. There are some great phrases and expressions in the book too.

funny funny funny
This book offered hysterical insights into the travels that we all could have had. What a treat. If you are a fan of Clive James, pick it up.
